Handle me GENTLY

Handle me GENTLY
(Chemistry Journal)
Fragile and sensitive, one false move and they might break into pieces. What are they? Laboratory apparatus it is! These are the friends of the Chemists which used mainly to mix, pour, heat and store chemicals which may or may not be harmful to humans.
Let me name some of them and their uses:
Burette- a glass-tube with measurements marked on the side and a stopcock at the bottom, used in laboratories to release an accurately measured quantity of liquid.
Microscope- a device that uses a lens or a system of lenses to produce a greatly magnified image of an object.
Evaporating Dish- a porcelain or glass dish used to heat and evaporate liquids into residue.
Distilling Flask- used as a container of the solution to be distilled in the distillation process.
Crucible- a heat-resistant vessel used for melting substances requiring extreme heat and temperature.
Crucible Tong- used in holding hot crucible and other materials.
Centrifuge Tube- used as container of the solution to be centrifuge.
Funnel- a cone-shaped utensil with a large opening at the top and a small opening or tube at the bottom, used to guide liquids and other substances into containers.
Mortar & Pestle- used to crush solid into powders for experiments.
Pipette- a small glass tube used for measuring small volumes of liquid direct from reagent bottle.
Test tube- a small glass tube-conatiner that is closed and rounded at one end and open at the other, used to mix, heat and store chemicals.
Beaker- a flat-bottomed wide-mouthed glass container used in laboratory measurements and to hold and heat liquids.
Connecting Tubes- used for connecting two or more containers with the use of rubber tubing.
Clamp Holder- used to hold the iron clamp.
Florence Flask- a container for boiling liquid solution and for measuring large quantities of liquid.
Graduated Cylinder- a glass vessel with straight sides and circular ends of equal size with measurements used for liquid volume.
Wire Gauze- a fine mesh of thin wires woven closely together used to regulate the heat of a Bunsen burner.
Bunsen Burner- portable tube-shaped gas burner with an adjustable hole to control air intake and flame type, used in laboratories.
Aspirator- an apparatus for drawing out fluids or gases by suction.
Bell Jar- a large thick-walled glass used for covering and storing volatile chemicals.
I've already mentioned and enumerated some of the laboratory apparatus. Now, I'm gonna tell you how to take care of them, how to use them wisely and some safety precautions:
If possible, wear a laboratory gown to free your clothes from stain. A kitchen gown will do.
Be careful in heating objects.Point the test tube away from you or your classmate. The hot content may be thrown out on you.
In dilluting acids or adding an acid to another liquid, ALWAYS add the acid to the water or another liquid using a glass rod to guide the flow of the liquid as you pour.
To insert glass tubing through a cork or rubber stopper, NEVER push in the glass tubing as it may break. Protect your hands with gloves or the cloth or paper towels. Hold the stopper with one hand and insert the tube with a screlike motion.
To smell the odor of a substance, fan the vapor towards you because some substances may have irritating or obnoxious odor.
Taste only substances that your teacher tell you to. Some substances may be poisonous.
In case of fire, cover the burning object with a wet cloth. DO NOT PANIC.
Refrain from playing inside the laboratory while doing the experiment.
ALWAYS ask the teacher if the procedure is not vlear to you.
Now that I've completed my mission (or should I say my topic in this journal), I have to go because my hands are so numb in typing, my back is already aching so bad, my eyes are a bit teary now and my posture is getting worse. So, until next time.
P.S. Sir Reyes, PLEASE DO give me a HIGH GRADE in this journal of mine. My body is now aching so badly. Thanks and God Bless!
